Historic Stone Cleaning on the West Coast of Scotland

This project involved the specialist cleaning of a historic stone property located on Scotland’s west coast, where exposure to the elements had resulted in significant biological and environmental staining. The façade had accumulated lichen, salt crusts, atmospheric pollution, and general surface soiling over a prolonged period. The structure’s heritage status required a cleaning method that was both effective and conservation-safe.

Working in partnership with the main contractor, we coordinated phased access and a sensitive approach to ensure protection of the original materials. The DOFF superheated steam cleaning system was selected for its ability to remove biological growth and carbon-based deposits without the use of chemicals or high pressure. This ensured that the integrity of the sandstone was maintained throughout the process.

There were specific challenges on this site, including fragile mortar joints in sheltered areas and complex elevations that required careful setup and manual adjustment. Our operatives made on-site refinements to temperature, nozzle distance, and dwell time to suit the varying conditions across the building.

The outcome was a clean, dry, and stable surface that met conservation expectations and satisfied all involved. The natural and beautiful colouration of the stone was revealed without over-cleaning or abrasive damage, aligning with the client’s brief and the architect’s specification.
